Ospreys are very picky eaters. They feed almost exclusively on live fish and will rarely fly more than 6 miles from their nest to find food. Ospreys will eat fish from the ocean, lakes, rivers – and even back-yard ponds! This need for live fish is what makes ospreys very hard to care for in captivity.
Osprey chicks take small bits of food from their parents’ bills. Mom or dad tears off a bite of fish and passes it directly to the chick. As the chicks grow, the adult ospreys are constantly fishing and delivering their catch to their hungry – and noisy – brood. At first 2 or 3 fish might be enough, but by the time the chicks are 40 days old, the adults are delivering up to six fish a day.
And if I said you were piscivorous, you must eat like an osprey – devouring lots and lots of fish!
