Kids’ books versus children’s literature

AndertoonsIs this a case of ‘I say potato, you say spud?’  I don’t think so.  In my mind, children’s literature is like adult literature: finely crafted prose that delves deep into social issues.  Great stuff.  Meaningful stuff.  Heavy stuff.  These are the books that win awards.  Kids’ books are what most kids read, for a giggle or a cry, to escape or to be thrilled.  Children’s literature and kids’ books are both essential in getting kids reading, keeping them reading, and challenging them to think.  It takes equal but different skill to craft each and, as a writer, a lot can be learned from both.
