I could watch the gorillas at the zoo for hours. Did you know they are the largest of the apes and live only in the forests of Africa? Here are a few more facts about gorillas:
- Western lowland gorillas are the most common type of gorilla found in zoos.
- An adult gorilla may eat more than 40 pounds (18 kg) of food a day, but will rarely drink water. The leaves, shoots, and stems of plants provide enough water.
- Twins are very rare for gorillas.
- Gorillas have no natural predators. Their numbers are falling because of human activities, like logging, mining, farming, and war. And, of course, hunting.
- Gorillas have an opposable thumb on each hand, like humans do, as well as an opposable toe on each foot!
There are days when I could use another pair of hands, but opposable toes might be a challenge. I’d have to re-think shoes.
