Five Fast Facts for Friday: Gorillas

I could watch the gorillas at the zoo for hours. Did you know they are the largest of the apes and live only in the forests of Africa? Here are a few more facts about gorillas:

  1. Western lowland gorillas are the most common type of gorilla found in zoos.
  2. An adult gorilla may eat more than 40 pounds (18 kg) of food a day, but will rarely drink water. The leaves, shoots, and stems of plants provide enough water.
  3. Twins are very rare for gorillas.
  4. Gorillas have no natural predators. Their numbers are falling because of human activities, like logging, mining, farming, and war. And, of course, hunting.
  5. Gorillas have an opposable thumb on each hand, like humans do, as well as an opposable toe on each foot!

There are days when I could use another pair of hands, but opposable toes might be a challenge. I’d have to re-think shoes.
